These Bareback Riding Pads are so versatile that they can be used in almost any situation. Primarily designed for a safer and more comfortable bareback riding experience; allowing you to feel the warmth and movement of your horse, whilst having the security of the foam cantle and pommel/knee blocks (depending on the model).

Now these bareback pads are also being used for:

- Backing youngsters - the bareback pad is lightweight and warm, allowing for a pleasurable experience when saddling up. Rider aids and body movement can be more easily felt by the horse, helping the horse to understand what we are teaching. Equally the rider can feel and anticipate the horses response better.
- Bringing horses back into work after a rest period or back injury. The underside of the bareback pad is sheepskin, which promotes blood circulation to the muscles, aiding the repair and rebuilding of the muscles.
- Dressage schooling - with no pressure points, horses can lengthen their stride and lift their backs in comfort, allowing for a more fluid movement.
- Good rider position - Aiding balance, control, stamina and core strength. The sheepskin topside of the bareback pads also offers great shock absorption for the riders spine, allowing the rider to relax through the lower back.
- Saddle fitting problems - Some horses are very difficult to fit a saddle to (our native breeds being a prime example) so the bareback pad has become a welcome replacement. Being treeless and completely flexible it can suit most shapes and sizes.

Many of our customers are Happy Hackers and love the soft feel comfort of the sheepskin for longer rides. A few of our customers exercise different horses for a living and like the flexibility of being able to use just the one bareback pad on many different horses. They are used extensively by RDA and Hippotherapy groups.
Often recommended by equine physiotherapists and saddle fitters, they have become a 'must have' for many riders.

Design
These bareback riding pads basically are made up of: the sheepskin seat area for the rider to sit on (shaped to incorporate the foam pieces), a strong cotton quilted numnah centre structure and a sheepskin base, against the horses back. All pads have a foam cantle (design varies according to model) and foam pommel/knee rolls (according to model)
All these bareback pads have shim pockets either side of the spinal canal and are supplied with 15mm compressed foam shims in place. This gives extra protection for the horses back from rider seat bones (try sitting on your hands for 5 minutes and you will see what the pressure of your seat bones can feel like to your horse!)
They are very light, making them easy to carry and weightless to your horse.
All pads have a strong balance strap at the front (which is also useful for carrying the pad), D rings at the front for the attachment of a breastplate/martingale, if required, and two girth straps to take a dressage girth. You can use any dressage girth with these bareback pads. We offer a range of matching sheepskin girths.
The girth straps are leather outer, with high-strength webbing core. The leather has been treated so that it is not affected when the bareback pad is washed.

Stirrups
All models have a strong stainless steel D ring for attaching stirrups if required. Please always use safety stirrups as there is no 'quick release'.
The 'D ring' attachment on the Bareback pads is sited lower than the 'stirrup bars' on a saddle, so you will need shorter stirrup leathers (or the ability to shorten your own)
Basic PLUS, Premium PLUS - stirrups will need to be approx 25cm/10" shorter
Iberica PLUS -  stirrups will need to be approx 6cm/2.5"
Cloud Special - stirrups will need to be approx 10cm/4" shorter

We advise a shimmed numnah or saddle pad under your bareback pad if using stirrups

Sizing - a rough guide
Shetland size pad is suitable for small children (Iberica PLUS will take larger children)
Pony size pad is for larger children and small adults.
Full size pad is for Adults.
(shorter adults up to and incl. UK jean size 10 should be fine with pony size. Taller adults size 10 may find the pony size too restrictive)

Ideally you would use a pony size pad on a pony and a full size pad on a horse, but they can wear either size. The pony size pad on a horse is no problem; you will just need a longer girth. Full size on a pony will depend on the size of your pony - these bareback pads are large and long and you might find the panels come too far down for practical fitting of a girth.

Please note - Although the seat size measurement between pommel and cantle of the Iberica is less than the seat size of the Premium PLUS, the Iberica does actually offer more room as the Premium seat size is restricted slightly by the position of the thigh rolls. So if you want pony size bareback pad with more seat room, the Iberica is a better choice than Premium.

The Different Models

We have two 'English style' pads - The Basic PLUS Bareback pad and Premium PLUS Bareback pad. The Basic PLUS has a small 'half moon' shaped foam cantle, but no pommel or knee rolls. The Premium PLUS has the same foam cantle and the addition of foam knee rolls which offer a greater feeling of security. Both are straight cut like a dressage numnah.

Below you can see the Basic PLUS on the left and Premium PLUS on the right (both are the charcoal colour)

Latest addition - Christ Lammfelle have produced the Cloud Bareback pad, based on the treeless saddle. Looking and feeling more like a saddle it still retains that closeness to the horse where warmth and muscle movement can still be felt. This pad has more structure to it than the other bareback pads. It has a shaped sheepskin topside with a foam pommel and large 'half moon' rounded cantle. An extra panel covers the girth straps (like the panel on a saddle) this panel has an anti chafing surface that stops wear and tear from stirrup leathers. An adjustable foam seat gives extra comfort to the rider (it acts like a 'hip saver' but is removable if not required). This pad also has knee blocks, fastened with velcro to the under panel; these can be re-positioned to suit the rider. The underside of this bareback pad is fully lined with sheepskin; approx 30mm in the seat area and 10mm on the panels.

Matching Shimmed Numnahs and Saddle Pads

Shimmed Numnahs and Saddle Pads are also available, especially designed for these bareback pads. Numnahs and Saddle Pads are great for keeping your Bareback Pad clean, but were mainly designed for riders spending longer time in the saddle - even better weight distribution and comfort for both horse and rider. For heavier riders; again better weight distribution and comfort for both horse and rider. Also for riders using stirrups, the extra layers of numnah/sheepskin/shims protect your horses back from pressure from the stirrup band and D ring attachment.

Washing and Care
All Horse Dream bareback riding pads can be machine at low temperatures (max 30 degrees) using C7 sheepskin detergent. This specially formulated detergent will preserve the natural oils in the sheepskin, keeping it soft and supple.

You can also tumble dry at low temperature (max 30 degrees) or lay out flat to dry, sheepskin side up.

The Basic PLUS model will fit in a domestic washing machine.
Premium PLUS, Iberica PLUS and the Cloud will unzip into two sections - the top section (where the rider sits) will rarely need washing. The bottom section will now fit into a domestic washing machine. Very clever design.
Before washing all foam pieces must be removed - shims, pommel, cantle, knee rolls etc.
Brushing after washing, when your bareback pad is dry, will tease the sheepskin fibres and keep it fluffy and looking like new. You can also brush in between washes (cutting down the need to wash) Wait until mud, sweat, dirt etc is dry and just brush off. Sheepskin is easy to care for and is actually quite dirt resistant. You can also sponge off the panels.
