The Horse Dream Bareback Riding Pads are still one of our most popular products.
Manufactured by Christ Lammfelle, these sheepskin pads have replaced the saddle for many of our customers.
Commonly known as Fellsattel, Sheepskin Saddles, Fur Saddle and Sheepskin Treeless Saddle

Christ Lammfelle bareback pads basically incorporate a sheepskin seat area for the rider to sit on, a strong cotton quilted numnah centre structure and a sheepskin base against the horses back.
All the bareback pads have shim pockets either side of the spinal canal and are supplied with 15mm compressed foam shims. This gives extra protection for the horses back from rider seat bones (try sitting on your hands for 5 minutes and you will see what the pressure of your seat bones can feel like to your horse!) They are very light, making them easy to carry and weightless to your horse.
All pads have a strong balance strap at the front (which is also useful for carrying the pad), D rings at the front for the attachment of a breastplate/martingale, if required, and two girth straps to take a dressage girth. The girth straps are leather outer, with high-strength webbing core. The leather has been treated so that it is not affected when the bareback pad is washed. All models have a strong stainless steel D ring for attaching stirrups if required. Please always use safety stirrups as there is no 'quick release'. Shorter stirrup leathers will be required - you can use your own leathers but you will need to be able to shorten them by a few holes.

They are so versatile that they can be used in almost any situation. Primarily designed for a safer and more comfortable bareback riding experience; allowing you to feel the warmth and movement of your horse, whilst having the security of the foam cantle and pommel/knee blocks (depending on the model).
Now these bareback pads are also being used for:

- Backing youngsters - the bareback pad is lightweight and warm, allowing for a pleasurable experience when saddling up. Rider aids and body movement can be more easily felt by the horse, helping the horse to understand what we are teaching. Equally the rider can feel and anticipate the horses response better.
- Bringing horses back into work after a rest period or back injury. The underside of the bareback pad is sheepskin, which promotes blood circulation to the muscles, aiding the repair and rebuilding of the muscles.
- Dressage schooling - with no pressure points, horses can lengthen their stride and lift their backs in comfort, allowing for a more fluid movement.
- Good rider position - Aiding balance, control, stamina and core strength. The sheepskin topside of the bareback pads also offers great shock absorption for the riders spine, allowing the rider to relax through the lower back.
- Saddle fitting problems - Some horses are very difficult to fit a saddle to (our native breeds being a prime example) so the bareback pad has become a welcome replacement. Being treeless and completely flexible it can suit any shape or size.

Many of our customers are Happy Hackers and love the soft feel comfort of the sheepskin for longer rides. A few of our customers exercise different horses for a living and like the flexibility of being able to use just the one bareback pad on many different horses. They are used extensively by RDA and Hippotherapy groups.
Often recommended by equine physiotherapists and saddle fitters, they have become a 'must have' for many riders.

We have two 'English style' Bareback pads - The Basic PLUS and Premium PLUS. The Premium PLUS has the addition of foam knee rolls which offer a greater feeling of security.

Christ Lammfelle later created the Iberica PLUS, which is based on the Spanish saddle (and very popular with Western riders). Shown below in natural colour

And now Christ Lammfelle have produced the Cloud 'Special' Bareback pad,  based on the treeless saddle. Looking and feeling more like a saddle it still retains that closeness to the horse where warmth and muscle movement can still be felt. This pad has more structure to it than the other bareback pads. It has a shaped sheepskin topside covering a foam pommel and large rounded cantle. An extra panel covers the girth straps (like the panel on a saddle) this panel has an anti chafing surface that stops wear and tear from stirrup leathers. An adjustable foam seat gives extra comfort to the rider (removable if not required) and movable knee blocks can be attached. The underside of this bareback pad is fully lined with sheepskin; approx 30mm in the seat area and 10mm on the panels.

Christ Lammfelle T- Bar stirrup leathers are also available, cutting down the bulk of a buckle under your leg. The stirrup leathers are also made from leather outer, with high-strength webbing core to prevent stretching. Stirrup leather length is adjustable between 45-60cm.

All Horse Dream bareback pads can be machine at low temperatures (max 30 degrees) using C7 sheepskin detergent. This specially formulated detergent will preserve the natural oils in the sheepskin, keeping it soft and supple.
You can also tumble dry at low temperature (max 30 degrees) or lay out flat to dry, sheepskin side up.
The Basic PLUS model will fit in a domestic washing machine. Premium PLUS, Iberica PLUS and the Cloud will unzip into two sections - the top section (where the rider sits) will rarely need washing. The bottom section will now fit into a domestic washing machine. Very clever design.
Before washing all foam pieces must be removed - shims, pommel, cantle, knee rolls etc.
Brushing after washing, when your bareback pad is dry, will tease the sheepskin fibres and keep it fluffy and looking like new. You can also brush in between washes (cutting down the need to wash) Wait until mud, sweat, dirt etc is dry and just brush off. Sheepskin is easy to care for and is actually quite dirt resistant. You can also sponge off the panels.
